At Sapphire Dentistry we have been offering Dental Implant services to Doncaster and surrounding residents for many years and successfully helped hundreds of patients achieve a better quality of life. A dental implant is a surgical device that replaces an entire tooth or set of teeth. It is connected to the jaw as an anchor point and provides support for a dental prosthesis such as a denture, bridge, or crown. The dental implant procedure has been received by millions of individuals successfully. It is a safe and effective method to replace the tooth from the bone up. This allows for natural function of the mouth and jaw as if the implant were your natural teeth. Everyday activities such as eating, talking, and smiling will be as if your natural teeth were in your mouth, giving you back your confidence and self-esteem.
Types of Dental Implants
There are a couple different types of implants that are routinely used. The root form type of implant is most common. When you think of an implant this is typically the implant that you are familiar with. This is when an implant is surgically placed into the jaw and a prosthetic is placed on top giving the look and feel of a natural tooth. The root form implant can also be used as a support for bridges or crowns.
In this instance, an implant technique called an immediate load or same day implant can be done. During this technique, you will receive both a crown and an implant on the same day, as the name implies. This allows you to go about your daily life until the bone and the implant fuses together. At which time you will receive your long-term crown which is typically in about 3 to 6 months.
Utilising a similar technique is a prosthesis brand named All-on-4. In this approach, a full arch is implanted on the bottom or the top arch, resting on four implants to support replacement teeth. This concept relies on available bone structure, in contrast to a traditional implant which typically requires a bone graft. This procedure is finalised in about six months when the permanent bridge is placed. During this time, the patient usually must adjust their diet.
Dental implants are not for everybody. To be a good candidate for dental implants you should have healthy gums and sufficient bone in both upper and lower jaw. Certain conditions may also make you a good candidate for implants such as if you have bruxism or clench and grind your teeth, also some medications that suppress your immune system may also be acceptable. Age is usually not a factor when receiving dental implants if you are in good general health and fit the criteria for a suitable dental implant candidate.
Conditions which may make dental implants unsuitable for you
- you are a heavy smoker
- your bones have not stopped growing
- you’re pregnant
- you’re an alcohol or substance abuser
- have recently received high doses of radiation around the head
- or if you have chronic diseases or systemic problems such as uncontrolled diabetes, hemophilia, immune deficiency, or diseases of the connective tissue
