Same-Day Crowns (CEREC)

Dental crowns are designed to protect damaged, worn and cracked teeth and also improve appearance.

Placing a traditional dental crown requires one treatment to examine and measure the tooth and another to place the crown. However, due to our advanced technology, Sapphire Dentistry can perform same-day crowns, making the procedure more time-efficient for our patients.

Same Day Crowns Process

Are You a Suitable Candidate for Same-Day Crowns?

What is it?

Same-Day Crowns are similar to traditional crowns except the main difference is that these crowns can be made in a matter of hours using 3D technology. In a single visit you can have your crowns made and inserted.

Who needs it/what does it fix?

If you are experiencing the following issues, Same-Day Crowns may be the right solution for you:

  • Cracked, chipped, or fractured teeth
  • Broken teeth
  • Teeth with large dental fillings
  • Worn-down teeth

The Journey

Our Doncaster clinic uses top-of-the-line equipment to take high-definition images of your teeth from several angles and precise measurements. We use them to determine the teeth that need the porcelain crown. Compared to a metal crown, the porcelain one looks and feels more natural.

We then send the measurements to a milling machine that will craft the crown. We complete the entire procedure in a couple of hours, in a single visit.

With proper maintenance, same-day crowns can last for up to ten years.

What is CEREC?

(Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic or Ceramic Reconstruction)

Traditionally, after a tooth is prepared for an inlay, onlay or crown restoration, an impression is taken, and the crown is made in a dental laboratory. The final crown is cemented on the second visit, and there is an interval of a few weeks in between, where the tooth will have a temporary crown.

CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic or CEramic REConstruction) is a revolutionary restorative dental procedure that eliminates the need for multiple visits and eliminates the wait between tooth preparation and restoration. It leverages the power of CAD-CAM (computer-assisted design / computer-aided manufacturing) to precisely scan and fabricate an inlay / onlay restoration, or a crown while you are still in the dental chair.

Due to this unique process, CEREC is capable of restoring your tooth’s form, function, strength and aesthetics very quickly and efficiently.

What does the CEREC Process Involve?

Examination – One of our dentists will firstly examine your tooth to determine if it is suitable for a CEREC restoration, and if any other treatment is required before we are ready to proceed. Once the treatment plan is finalized, we will book an appointment with the appropriate length of time, depending on the number of teeth involved and the type of CEREC restoration required.

Preparation – This appointment begins with a local anesthetic to numb the area, then the tooth is prepared to the correct shape and dimensions.

Optical Impression – A 3D image of the tooth is created with a digital scan, eliminating the need for a physical mould of your teeth. This digital 3D image will be used to fabricate your restoration, using specialized software to create a suitable design. You can watch on the computer screen as the program designs your crown or restoration.

Milling Unit – The finished design is sent wirelessly to the milling machine, which cuts out the precise shape of the restoration, creating a custom restoration uniquely fitted to your tooth. This restoration is made from a tooth-coloured ceramic with a shade that matches your existing teeth. The restoration is then polished or placed in a furnace, depending on the type of material used.

Placing the Restoration – Once fabricated, the restoration is bonded into place with a dental cement.

Advantages of CEREC

  • Most procedures can be completed in a single visit
  • One less visit
  • Reduced discomfort and pain (one visit vs multiple)
  • No messy impressions necessary
  • No need for temporary restorations between visits
